9800 Pro Fan

Just wondering who else has had problems with the cooling on their ATI
Radeon 9800 Pro. I sent my card back to ATI about 4 months ago and
they sent me a brand new card! However, the fan on the new card makes
loud noises on startup and I am noticing a diminished performance on my
games (locks up in UT 2K4)! Although my card is still under warranty,
I am debating just ripping out the heat sink and fan and replacing with
an aftermarket unit. The unit that seems compatible with this card is
the Artic Cooling ATI Silencer Rev 2. Comments? Suggestions? Or,
maybe the funds would be better spent on a new AGP card?

Is this cooling issue a problem with ALL ATI products, or just the
Radeon series?

Thx!

Keep in mind that putting on a new HS/fan unit will probably void your
warranty.

Back when the 9800 Pro first appeared on the market, a lot of owners
replaced the stock cooler with the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer right out of
the box, just to get lower noise and far better cooling. The ATi Silencer
Rev 2 is a newer model with what appears to be a copper baseplate and even
larger fan. It'll be a worthwhile investment for ~ $30. The alternative,
shipping the card back for a second replacement, will cost you almost as
much...

Depending on the PCB revision of the card, you can also try the ATi Silencer
3:

Many newer 9800 Pro cards use the 9800XT PCB, identified by a really
low-profile blue VGA connector. The Silencer 3 has the benefit of memory
cooling.

Will the ATI Silencer 3 work on a AIW 9800 Pro?

I doubt it. That TV tuner "tin box" probably interferes with the bottom of
the fan shroud. The VGA Silencer should work, though:

Anyone can reassemble the original cooler back onto the card if warrentee service is needed.

Try the Thermalright V-1 cooler, it's what I use on my X800XL, with an added
fan on the second heat sink, which is thread tapped for that.

If you don't want to mess with the Silencer, Vantec (i think) makes
a fan card (~$10) with dual fans that plugs into a PCI socket next
to your video card. Doesn't move the hot air out of the case like
the silencer, but extremely simple and effective.

No revision issues either.

I guess I give people more credit than that. How closely do you have to
look to see that the HS was re-applied? Don't those stock units typically
use thermal tape of some sort to hold it on, and wouldn't that get all
munged up taking it off?

I've been thinking about replacing the HS/fan of my X1800GTO for noise
reasons, but since it's only a week old, I'm a little leary about voiding
the warranty already...

I had trouble with the pitiful little fan on my 9800 AIW Pro card, it
was slowing and noisy, bought a Zalman VF700-CU fan and put it on, then
had to temporarily take it off because I hadn't taken into account the
Tin box for the TV in components, a few minutes with the dremel tool and
removing about 5 of the copper fins resulted in a good fit. This fan is
very quiet and I am more than please with the results.

BTW I emailed ATI two weeks before buying this new fan and as of today,
have heard nothing from them.
