Bought a new ATI 9800 NP from circuit city yesterday (new never opened in
the packaging). Installed the card, drivers and software and saw that XP
recognized the card as a 9800 PRO.

Label on the card 'Radeon 9800 128m'
Memory is Infieon 3.0
Speed is 324/290

I thought that the 9800 NP memory was 3.3? Thought the default speed was
325/310?

Did I get a card that was somehow modded? When I tried to save the bios to
see what it was, I received and error message reading flashrom.rom. Any
help on what I have would be greatly appreciated.

Not necessarily bad.

Can't remember the default speeds... Infineon 3.0ns RAM is good for 333MHz,
9800 Pro usually uses 2.86 Samsung to get to 350MHz - I think the default is
~340MHz.

Sounds reasonable.

Just install an overclocking utility and set it to what it should be for a
non-pro. If you get artifacts, send the thing back.

Everything is normal there, the infineon is 3.0 and the samsung is 3.3 for
the 9800np. Your clock speeds are correct. The samsung memory overclocks
better, often to pro speed than the infineon, which often artifacts around
320 or so, despite it's speed rating. Some systems see the cards as a pro,
but they still run as the np.
I have the Sapphire 9800np and the default speed is 320/290; I have the
samsung 3.3 ram and can run fine at 400/345. I don't think there is much
varience in stock speeds among manufacturers.

The only difference between np and Pro is the clock speed so who cares that
driver says it's a pro.
Things would be troublesome if the driver said SE.
