HELP!!

I am having huge problems with my 9800 pro aiw card. When it boots
up, everything is fine until it has to display any color. When it has
to display color, I get all these lines on the screen and the colors
are all screwed up. I suspected hardware failure, but I wanted to try
to fix it. I followed the instructions at:

to try to re-flash my 9800 bios. Unfortunetly I missed the step about
backing up my bios (I KNOW I KNOW) and now my card is non-functional
all together. My question is.. is there anyone out there with a
All-in-wonder 9800 pro that can connect me with a copy of their bios?
I need to find my original bios so that I can put it back on the
card... ((

know its a stretch.. but am hoping someone will be kind enough to help
me out...

So, you wanted to get something for nothing and you ended up with nothing (a
dead video card) for something (whatever you paid for the video card).

You obviously did not "absolutely know" what you were doing, and the above
self-fulfilling prophecy came true. Congratulations.

If you had a PRO AIW why did you use a procedure to flash a non-PRO to a
PRO? Sounds like a BS story to me.

On the outside chance that your original post had some typo's..... Great
news you have blown any applicable warranty.

Contact ATI and send it in for a non-warranty repair.

I can't add to anything the others have suggested as it would appear you've
blown the card. However, in the future before attempting anything drastic
and I consider what you did well beyond drastic, you should try swapping
with a different card or connecting the monitor to another system before
suspecting the card is at fault.

Second, you should make sure your adjustments with regard to the card and
display settings are not outside the specs for the monitor.

Third, assuming no problem with the monitor and settings, you should make
sure the card is well seated in its slot and then check for the
manufacturer's website for the latest drivers for the card. Even with a new
card, you have no way of knowing how long it has been since shipped from the
manufacturer and drivers, especially graphics drivers are updated
frequently.

Fourth, assuming the latest drivers you should then check out drivers for
other hardware, possibly change the slots in which some of your other PC
cards are situated as one of them may be conflicting with the graphics card
and changing the slot of another card might change its IRQ and possibly stop
any such conflict which might be the source of the issue.

Since the other responders are a$$holes (aside from Michael) and are
offering nothing but contempt, I will try to offer some help. When flashing
an AGP card's bios, a common practice among modders is to install a PCI
video card as a backup. When the AGP card dies, the system will see the PCI
and still boot & run windows. You can find them online (or at computer
shows) for as cheap as $10.

When you have a PCI card in your system & can get it booting again (with the
AGP card still in) go to www.rojakpot.com . This site has lots of info on
flashing ATI bios', especially where to find them.

Rube, I was merely pointing out the obvious. Why on earth would you put
your faith (and money) in an update created by whomever without contacting
the manufacturer of the product for assistance / warranty, and to properly
explore less drastic options first. In my opinion he went to the "last
resort" option first and learned a valuable lesson.

I also stand by my assistance to his situation: Send it to ATI for a proper
non-warranty repair.

drop of performance out of a piece of hardware is your problem, not his (or
mine.) What you call faith, I call knowledge. I've flashed many video bios'
myself and am currently running an alternate bios. Yes, I voided my
warranty, but I saved $200 & got the performance for "free."
Thirdly, why are you advising to send it to ATI when you KNOW they won't
service it? Flashing the BIOS is a guarantee that they won't even help him
out, even if he offered to pay for it.
Finally, I'm pretty sure you consider his "learned lesson" as that of a
scolded puppy, as in he won't be doing that anymore. I, on the other hand am
pointing out that not all is lost. He probably feels bad enough at hosing
his card in the first place, no need to rub salt in the wounds. . .
Maybe people should remember the spirit of these forums is to help.

Rube, first I thank you for specifically excluding me in your initial
response.

Second, since this is an open community with a lot of users who are novices
or novice to intermediate users, I think you'd agree, most of them don't
fall into the "wring" every ounce of performance category. For their
benefit, since these are peer to peer groups, I do think it is important to
stress, flashing the BIOS of a graphics card is quite a bit out of the
ordinary, can be quite dangerous as exemplified by the OP and is not
something most users need to do and most users don't.

I don't think we want to be giving the impression this is something most
users should even consider especially given the symptoms in the OP. Even
for the knowledgeable user who has the experience of doing this, I'd
strongly recommend it be a last resort, one taken only after ruling out all
other possibilities insofar as the situation described in the OP.

The OP is clearly not a member of that "community." He had some video
problems and tried to solve in a drastic manner despite explicit warnings.
He was certainly not trying to (pointlessly) "wring every last drop of
performance" out of anything. He was trying to get his video to work.

Have you ever asked a card manufacturer for paid repairs? I think you might
be surprised at what they'll do if the price is right. And encouraging the
OP, an obviously clueless individual, to proceed with messing around with
reflashing the BIOS is irresponsible on your part.

I'm glad that I've finally located the individual who decides what "the
spirit of these forums" is. I had been under the apparently mistaken
impression that this group and Usenet in general is a free and open place
