I have a not so old digital camera whose software says Windows 98/ME/2000.
My computer uses XP. Can I still use this camera on my computer? It's a
cheap camera.

Perhaps. I would think that if it would work under Windows 2000, it would
also work under Windows XP. I would also try going to the manufacturers
website, and see if they have an updated version for Windows XP.

likely not because
it would require the camera
maker to write a new twain driver
then provide it for free. Did you
check the website for updates or
patches?

if none is available then it is likely that
they would prefer to sell
you a whole new camera that is
compatible.

the next best thing is to transfer you pics
via digital card from your camera to pc.

then use a software like picassa or something
to edit them. I use photoshop then upload
them to walmart for printing. they too might
have an editing software avail for free.

Go to the vendor's website and see if they have software for Windows XP.

Try it (Should work) but make a system restore point before that.

There are two related issues: (1) reading files from the camera, (2)
processing images after they are on the hard drive.

XP has generic support to read from most digital cameras as if they were
small hard drives. Just plug the cameria into a USB port and in less than
30 seconds a new hard drive should appear in windows explorer. Copy files
from that hard drive to anywhere else you want.

As for processing images, most camera come with some special software,
sometimes proprietary, sometimes "lite" versions of a major product like
Photoshop. Such software may not be compatible with XP, although a win2K
version does have a good chance of running with XP.

But, realize that you do not need their software. Instead, you can use
other software. I happen to like Paint Shop Pro, and some swear by
Photoshop. Then, there are several free packages you could try, like
IRFANVIEW, PAINT-dot-net, and FRESHVIEW:

What software is that? Generally no special software is required. You
normally connect the camera (or its media card, in a card reader) to a USB
port in the computer, and the computer sees it and treats it as a disk
drive.

Assuming that yours works that way, it should work fine. Try it and see.

Check the manufacturer - they may have an XP driver for it.
