can a user install 98 on a computer formated for xp? I know that NTFS and
FAT16/FAT32 partioning is different and I therefore thought you might run
into some problems. Will that be the case?

XP can run on both FAT32 and NTFS so the fact that the computer
is "formatted for XP" could mean that it is either FAT32 or NTFS....

W98 will ONLY run on FAT32 AFAIK......

There is no such thing as "formatted for XP". Windows XP
will run happily on a FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS partition.
However, Win98 will not recognise NTFS partitions, only
FAT12/16/32 partitions.

You cannot install Windows 98 on an NTFS partition. But there is
nothing stopping you from formating a spare partition FAT32 and
installing it there. Depending on your partition layout you might have
to do a bit of fiddling about or use a third party boot manager to get
it to work but it is completely doable.

Gordon, Pegasus, and John John are all right. You can't install Windows 98
on an NTFS partition. The reason I am posting is that you CAN install
Windows 98 on a Hard Drive that has been previously formatted as NTFS. All
you have to do is load the Win98 disk boot to the CD then boot to option 2
windows 98 with cd rom support. Then run FDisk and follow the directions to
delete non-Dos partition. Then create a new primary partition. Then Format
and do the rest to install Windows 98. I don't really know why you want 98
instead of XP but to each his own and good luck,

Are you asking whether you can replace an XP installation with a Windows 98
installation?

If so, yes you can.

The Windows XP installation may be on NTFS drives/partitions, it may be on
FAT32 drives/partitions, or ot may be a mixture of both (some drives could
also be FAT16, although that's much less likely). If the installation XP
includes any NTFS drives or partitions, they will have be repartioned at
FAT16 or FAT32 before installing Windows 98.

Or FAT16.
