98 TO 2000 Upgrade

I have a Gateway computer that had 98 loaded. I have
tried to upgrade to Win2000 Professional and everything
was going just fine until a window appeared and said that
the computer would be shut down and restarted 4 times. I
acknowledged and the computer shut down and will not
restart. I have tried to boot the computer from the 2000
disk, but I get to a window that asks where I want to load
2000. The options are 19.5 GB "Unknown" and 8MB Partioned
and 8MB Unpartioned. When I choose either of the 8MB
options, it indicates it requires at least 753MB of
space. If I choose the Unpartioned, and try to increase,
it says I must delete this portion before it will allow me
to alter, but it also says this section may contain
crucial data.

Before I go further, this upgrade was supposed to leave
all my existing files and other downlowad programs
intact. How do I proceed without affecting the preceeding
files and programs?
