I really looked into this before ending up buying the 9800pro, but only
because I picked up the 9800pro for ~US$170.

If you want to take your chances with the softmod option the for the 9800se
money you can end up with a 9800pro.

If it fails you still end up with a "reasonable" card but the 9600XT is
slightly faster.

Faster by 1.7FPS in UT2003, slower by over 6FPS in Quake 3. Looks like
a swings and roundabouts situation UNTIL you softmod the 9800SE and
then you get an instant 50% increase.

OTTOH those benchamrks are at stock 9800SE speeds. THere's not many
9800SEs that won't run at 9800XT Core/Mem speeds.

Just to add..

THose tests were done on Radeon 9800SEs with 128bit Buses. Quite a few,
like mine, have a 256bit bus the same as the Pro/XT so would give a
higher score.

No question....the 9800XT is far above the 9800SE in terms of both
performance and cost. Many 9800SE's can be softmodded into a 9800 Pro which
results in about a 50% boost in performance. Detailed instructions on this
