I just replaced an nVidia FX5500 with an ATI 9600XT (both AGP).
This is on a Dell 8300, which has either a 250 or 300 watt power supply.

The machine seems to be running slower overall than with the
nVidia, including rendering pages in a browser -- occasionally
the page when maximizing an already opened page, only half
the page appears, then the rest after a few seconds. Could this
be due to increased power needs on the ATI card?

I only know that my 300 W PSU died after the 9600 XT was in. The new 380 W
is enough though. Second fan only activates under heavy load, and that only
happens when I use the TV out.

Did you fully uninstall the nvidia drivers? Try driver cleaner from
driverheaven.net.

I actually had a hell of a time uninstalling them -- I'd
uninstall them, would be promted to reboot, and then
there they would be again. I finally booted in safe mode and uninstalled, and
that seemed to work, but I'll follow your suggestion and see what
turns up -- thanks for the tip.

Did you make sure you removed all of your NVidia driver before installing
your ATI card and drivers?

Well, Driver Cleaner found some nVidia files and got rid of them, but
I'm still having problems. Additionally, when I boot up, the
desktop will appear for a bit, then go completely clank for a couple
seconds, and then reappear. Also, after I exit a full-windows
application (e.g., IE) my icons get redrawn one at a time.

Something's off -- this is slower performance than the nVidia 5500 it
replaced.
