95/98 compatibility mode, open file opens BEHIND main window

When installing a majority of my misc. win 98 software I got an access error
when I selected to open file and I selected the desired file, but the open
file window is on top where it should be. So I placed the exe in
compatibility mode and went to open the file again and I could not see the
file selection window. i selected another window and returned to the desred
program and upon return the open file window was on top. this is a repeatable
process in Corell draw as well as a 3rd party program I use frequently,
changing to compatibility mode for 95/98 will fix the file access issue, but
the open file window is behind the main one. just an irritant, does anyone
have a fix for this?

Probably the only solution will be to upgrade to a compatible version,
Chris.

It is important to note that I am running Windows Vista

But this is an issue with several programs designed for Win 98, and run in
Vista's Win 98 compatibility mode, it is the compatibility mode that is the
issue not the program. Corell i can upgrade, however the other is an
independantly programmed piece of software that was finished in development
in 98, so there will most likely be no update to the software itself. I
appreciate your help, but it seems easier to me to fix Vista's compatibility
program than re-program nearly a decades worth of software, Isn't that the
purpose of Compatibility mode?

Hi Chris,

Compatibility mode does as much as it can, but there are limitations. It
simply will not allow everything to work as it was expected to work in
Win98. Vista's user environment and program run mode are vastly different
than Win98's. The program was written expecting full system file access, and
may use hard-coded lines to routines that no longer even exist.
Compatibility mode will allow some things to work, but ultimately the real
solution has to come from the software vendor in rewriting it to meet
current operating system specifications.
