My question concerns a Sony Notebook with a 900MHz AMD Duron processor and
128MB of memory. XP Home Edition. It runs brutally slow compared to when it
was new. This is my Mother's and is hardly ever used yet something seems to
have dragged it down! I checked the System Properties and found that it is
only reporting 549MHz of that 900MHz and it is operating on AC power. Also,
the mouse pad and sound boot up normally at startup but after that it takes
almost 5 minutes for the Norton anti-virus, Windows Messenger and the
printer to load in. Does any of this sound normal for this computer? If I
were to Ram up to 512MB would that help anything? Lastly, is there a
diagnostic I can use to check these particular problems?
Thanks for any help and info!!!

Memory might help, but here are some other standard things you
can do.

1) Uninstall any unnecessary applications
2) Install AdAware and SpyBoy to make sure the system is clean
3) http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
4) de-fragmant your drive
