I'm looking to get an 8X DVD Writer. I saw a couple that looked good,
one by Plextor and one by HP.

Anyone here have any experiences or feedback on them?

Also any tips on what to look for? I've noticed alot of them have +RW, -RW,
etc. What
is all that? Thanks for the input.

Most newer DVD Writers are now coming out with the both standards
(+RW, -RW). I would not attempt to buy any older, single standard writers
nowdays.

As far as which model, HP seems to have a bad rep with CD Writers so I
would lean towards the Plextor.

I don't have an 8x but I just got my first DVD burner last week... the
Pioneer A06 recommended by Alvin.... and it's superb. Dual format +
and -.... have used Memorex DVD-Rs, have made 5 so far... and not a coaster
in sight.

Just like CDs, R is writeable once only and RW rewritable.

If you're ever going to play your DVDs in a standalone player, check at
www.dvdrhelp.com to check what your particular standalone supports. Most
support both formats, but if you're not going for a dual format burner, you
want to enure as much compatibility as possible.

Just remember that with DVD's, faster is not always better. I often find
that if I have trouble with a disc burned ts 4x, trying it at a lower speed
often helps, but this is dependant on the media you use. I'd steer well
clear of the budget unbranded discs and go for more expensive brands...
Ritek media using their G04 dye is probably one of the best these days so
check before you buy...

Thanks Alvin, I noticed the ones you recommended here are both 4X burners.
Do you have a 4X burner or agree with what Lorne wrote here? I just have
this problem with buying a 4X burner knowing that the 8X ones will be the
same price in about 6 months. Someone here mentioned the Benq, I've seen
that. Is that a cheaper brand or one that is just entering the market do you
know?

Also, if I went with a 4X, on average, how long would you say does it take
for one to burn a full length movie or compatible length disc? I remember
when I got my first CD burner (a 4X) the burn time was soooooooo slooooooow.
Is the technology changed so that discs burn faster or do DVD's burn faster
than CD's or is a disc a disc?

A lot of questions, but technology is tricky sometimes. Thanks again.

At 4x, a full 4.7gb disc takes about 15 minutes to burn... The 4x refers to
the DVD transfer rate which is considerably higher than CD transfer speeds.

As I mentioned in my post, speed is not the most important thing with DVD
burning, reliability is. By all means by an 8x speed burner, I'm sure you
will be more than happy with it, just remember that the 8x media is more
expesive (at the moment) and that you really MUST use good quality media if
you are burning at that speed... Cheep media will just result in
coasters...

I would also recommend you go for a bigger name if you can afford it. They
are generally more reliable in the long run. I understand Pioneer have
released the specs for the 107/A07 drive which AFAIK will be an 8x. Pioneer
are generally considered to be one of the best drives and they usually
provide OEM drive to other manufacturers for rebadging so are often
available cheaper. I myself bought a TEAC W50D 4x unit which is a rebadged
Pioneer 106/A06 and am more than happy with it (especially as it cost me £20
less than the Pioneer drive itself)
