I've been using my 8600GTS on Vista RC1.... I've just bought Vista Ultimate
with RC1 now being after June 1st. But now my vga card can't be seen. I've
got output to monitor no problem but its coming up as a standard VGA adaptor
with 4MB memory ... Confused. I've tried using microsoft to find drivers,
nvidia and the manufacturer sites for the drivers, none of which will
install.... Infact when i download the up to date nvidia driver and attempt
to install i'm getting an error regarding Age of empires 2 being not
compatable with Vista..... I'm haven't even ever played AOE2 lol. Any advice?
Is my card borked or is it Vista or driver related?

Thanks for your help in advance guys.

equionx101,

It's hard to say precisely why the latest nVidia drivers aren't installing,
so I'll just go along with the error message you're getting. That is, a game
the installer sees is incompatible with Vista. This event, even if in error,
could be causing the installation failure.

Vendors often bundle games with their graphics cards and related drivers.
Could you have such a game included with any of those drivers? Could it be
that maybe you haven't noticed? Just a thought. Other than that, there is
not good reason for the drivers not installing.

Take another look at any messages that accompany the drivers that you
obtained. Such information could be in a readme in the driver package, or it
could be in some release notes at the download website, or it could be
elsewhere. There has to be an explanation for this. Could Age of Empires 2
have been installed on your hard drive in error? That's a long shot, but
take a look to where such a game would be installed to see what's there. The
video card you have should work with no problem.

As a last resort, after you're confident the above points have no relevancy,
you could try booting in Safe Mode (press F8 after Post but before Windows)
and then try installing the drivers you have. You could also consider
posting this problem on an nVidia forum somewhere. There's a bunch out
there. That's all I have.

Hi Freddy,

I think... off the top of my head it is doing it with the drivers i've
downloaded directly off either the nvidia site or XFX site so yeah no chance
that i've got software with AOE2 on it, very odd.

Is it the latest 158.45 Beta drivers from the NVIDIA site that you are
trying to install?
Have you read through the installation notes and the release notes for the
release you are trying to install?
Did you download the English or one of the Foreign language drivers?

No its the 158.24 drivers, so the most stable new release.
Read through the release notes and installation, but either way the graphics
card should be PnP but it's still only seen as a standard vga adaptor. So the
drivers can't find the hardware, nor going into hardware profile and trying
to update drivers through Microsoft won't see it as the 8600GTS.

I assume that you are using the English drivers.
Have you checked to be sure that your BIOS is up to date?
Does the card show up correctly in Device Manager?

Another user reported that the International version of the nVidia drives caused
this Age of Empires error, but that the US version of the nVidia drivers did not
have this problem.

I got exactly the same error with 158.24 (international version). Never
played
AoE2 either. I downloaded Beta driver 158.45, and my computer is now steady
as a rock - no BSOD since then.

Yeah sorry, i'm using the English drivers. not checked the bios, but the
machine with all the same components but using RC1 previously was working
absolutely fine.
