Hello,

Will I notice any difference between a video card with a 8400GS and a
higher-end video card? I do not do any gaming, yet I do 3D cad, 2D imaging.

Thanks.

You should notice a significant difference upgrading an 8400gs to an
8600gt or an 8800gt, although those are gaming cards. Nvidia's
professional cards for CAD are called the Quadro line and the
competitive AMD product is the ATI Fire. The 8400gs is a low-end low
performance card and will bring down your overall performance score if
you are running Windows Vista. It is a low cost DirectX 10 capable
card but the Quadro and Fire cards are more suited to your
application. I used to use an XFX 8400gs on the system I am typing
this response on, but eventually upgraded to dual XFX 8600gt's running
in SLI - a significant increase in performance.

What do I get with a CAD card like Quadro, versus a gaming card?

Good question. Will do some research on that and get back to you.

Hello,

A CAD card like Quadro turns your pc into a graphics workstation
(working also with an appropriate processor and ram). Quadro is an
AutoCad certified soultion and delivers graphics for high-end
applications like 3D modeling and making feature films. Quadro cards
operate with significantly better performance than consumer cards (at
all levels). It is a solution for the graphics professional and that
is why it is priced higher than consumer cards.
