I have a simple wireless LAN. If I check "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication
for this network" under "View Available Wireless Networks," I am kicked off
my connection every three minutes and have to hit Enter to resubmit my WEP
key. Can I leave this setting turned off, or is it a security risk?

Your wireless access point probably doesn't support IEEE 802.1x
authentication, and your wireless network card is looking for that 802.1x
authentication, after 3 minutes or so of searching it'll then disconnect you
off the wireless network.

You can leave this option unchecked.
