I have 3 computers, all running XP, which work OK together
via ethernet, but problems with WiFi.
Desktop 1 is setup for ICS. It has an ethernet card and a
USB WiFi module. Everything works as it should via
ethernet, but without the ethernet connected, the laptop
cannot communicate with the network via its WiFi PCMCIA
card.
Both wireless adaptors are set up for ad hoc, with same
channel and SSID, no encryption and everything else on
auto. Both WiFi adaptors can see each other, whether I
set the laptop IP manually or for DHCP. DHCP appears to
be set correctly, so presumably the WiFi was able to do
that.
However, neither computer ping the other, and on the ICS
machine the 'Support' tab in the Wireless Network
Connection Status shows all the parameters as
<Unavailable>, whereas the same tab/window on the laptop
shows what I would expect from a correctly configured
machine. Is the <Unavailable> because it's the ICS
computer? I haven't disabled XP's firewall on the DSL
modem, because I want to stay safe and presume that this
firewall only operates on the Internet while allowing
everything on 192.168.0.xxx.
On a computer with 2 network devices, I'm not sure if they
should share an IP address, or need a separate one for
each adaptor.
Any ideas about what I might still try - or can you point
me to a URL that specialises in this sort of problem??
