Hi all,

I have Mosaer Baer Blank CD of 800MB/90M capacity but windows recognizes it
as a 703MB disk. Is there anything specific needed to configure windows xp
for recognizing this as 800MB? I have a genuine blank CD with specific
mention of 800MB/90M on the CD. Infact, Nero is also showing it as 703 MB
disk. Where is the problem, can anybody illustrate me please?

My guess it that it is limited by the cd dirve you are using

Ok. I have Panasonic Combo drive for my Compaq Presario 2100 notebook. I will
check its specifications and then let you know.

Open Nero Express. Click the More button then click Configure. Click Expert
Feature tab and then input the value of your CD in Time under "Enable
overburn Disc-at-once burng". For you 800MB CD then value should be 90 Mins.
You can also configure this through Nero Burning ROM - File menu -
Preferences.

If you will not configure this settings then while overburning a CD, Nero
will assume it as 700MB CD and will eject the CD stating something "CD is not
blank".

Now, when you will write a CD with more than 700MB data, you will be asked
for overburn, just press OK.

That's okay. I did see overburning feature in Nero but I didn't try it due to
the warning of overburning feature. However, again my question is that, why
in windows explorer also, the CD properties show it as 703 MB while it is a
800MB disk. Is there anything in windows also that needs to be configured for
an 800MB disk?
Also, did you face any trouble while using overburning feature in Nero? I
just skipped that due to warning?

Open Nero Express - Click More button - then click Disc Info button. It will
give you the exact information about your Disc.

2 Years ago when I had used the Overburning feature for the first time. I
had a Movie CD of 82 mintues and on the other hand I had a blank CD of 80
mintues. I wanted to make a copy of the CD and Nero was rejecting by blank
disc due to size incompatibility. I was amazed that what kind of CD that
movie company is using which is not available in the market. Then I Google a
lot for the same and found that it can be set through Expert Features. In
three website they also mention that the World Wide Standard of a Blank CD is
700MB. See, you can overburn your 700MB CD too but the only problem is that
it will corruptted because of the CD quality. Take a complete 700mb written
CD and check the written surface of that CD and you will notice that there
will be still empty space remaining on it. It shows that all the CDs
(including 700MB) has more space but you have 700MB writebale area available.
Therefore, you can overburn a 800MB CD because of its good surface and
quality.

I never ever faced any kind of problem with Overburning feature. I
overburned upto 89 mins. I link this feature a lot because now I have a copy
of my favorite movies.

Dear friends:

I understand that the blank CDs that have extra capacity, more than 80
minutes in audio, cannot tell to the software its exact capacity,
there is not an accepted standard to do that. So, the Explorer
supposes the standard capacity of 80 minutes.

You will not have any problem with Nero Overburning, providing that
your CD burner has this capability (Nero will check it for you), if
and only if the maximum capacity that you declares it to Nero matches
the maximum capacity of your blank CD. This matching, as I said
earlier, cannot be checked by Nero or by any software.

In other words, if your blank CDs are labeled as 90 minute CDs, and
you allow Nero to overburn up to 95 minutes, and you try to record in
this blank CD 94 minutes of music, you could have problems.

Thanks to all in this thread. Now I have a fair good idea of this overburning
CD concept. I think that after all, it's the CD burner which has to determine
what maximum capacity CD it can burn. That's the reason I think why Nero is
showing me it as 703 MB. I will try to check the specifications of my combo
drive first and then try it.
