8-mm Film to Computer for adding sound before DVD?

Last week I was handed a box containing several 200 ft. 8-mm reels of
film. No one has seen these films since the late 1950's. I would
like to move them to an XP Pro computer (with ATI Wonder graphic card
and lots of hard drive space). I need recommendations for what format
I should ask for so I can edit the films, then add sound and move them
to DVD? Recommendations will be most appreciated!

Cordially yours,

Young S.
