8 minute connection freeze

I've been investigating my curious connection freeze for a month now. It
happens when I connect to my network or to the internet via my modem.

I have ruled out poorly configured connections. I have ruled out most of the
software. No processes are hanging and no Programs are hanging. Windows
Explorer just... freezes. I can use programs but mouse clicks are stored and
don't register for a few minutes whereas the alt-Key combinations function
immediately. It's looking like a Windows Explorer cock-up, probably a bit of
bad programming by Microsoft .

I've tried connecting with and without various pieces of software running to
no avail. This is what's in my running processes tab and yes... I've checked
what this tab has been saying while the system's been frozen. No joy there.

alg.exe
avgcc32.exe
avgserv.exe
cidaemon.exe - 2
cisvc.exe
csrss.exe
ctfmon.exe
explorer.exe
gearsec.exe
icq.exe
inetinfo.exe
ipodservice.exe
ituneshelper.exe
jusched.exe
lsass.exe
lvcoms.exe
mqsvc.exe
tqtgsvc.exe
msdtc.exe
msnmsgr.exe
nopdb.exe
notepad.exe
nprotect.exe
osa.exe
qttask.exe
realsched.exe
services.exe
smss.exe
snmp.exe
soundman.exe
spoolsv.exe
svchost.exe - 5
system
system idle process
taskmgr.exe
tcpsvcs.exe
wfxsnt40.exe
wxfswitch.exe
winlogon.exe
ypager.exe

Any suggestions - anybody? I'm certainly NOT going to pay MickeySoft £80 to
fix their own blasted bugs. If it comes to something like that, I'll dump
Windows and use Mandrake as XP Pro seems utterly broken.

Delete about two or three of those items at a time until no lockups occur. AND
don't blame Microsoft. It's not their problem.

I had a similar problem about two years ago w/ an Abit KT7A-RAID mobo, but
was running W2K at the time. I could use Windows Explorer to access a
shared drive, but it would hang Windows after accessing the drive
successfully one time. After much experimentation, it turned out to be a
BIOS parameter that simply wouldn't work w/ W2K (although XP was fine).
Unfortunately, it's been long enough that I've forgotten specifically the
parameter, but I'm pretty sure it was in the Advanced Chipset Features
sections. Perhaps it was "PCI Master Read Caching", "PCI Delay
Transaction", etc., just not sure. But once I disabled it, all was normal.
So I suggest mucking around in that area and try disabling some features, or
perhaps setting to BIOS defaults at least for that page (not sure the
defaults are the *best* for this problem, but given the imprecise nature of
my response, it's probably a good starting point). Many people overlook the
BIOS when running into problems like this, sometimes the problem lies
DEEPER, in the bowels of your PC, like the BIOS, don't overlook it!

The odd thing is that this problem suddenly started a month or so back. XP
Pro was a fresh install on a new machine in November. I rolled back the
system until just before, to no avail.

Hmm. I've just deleted AVG Antivirus. I connected quickly and easily. If it
keeps working like this for three or four days that I'll know where the
blame lies By logical deduction, it's the only thing that it could be but
on the other hand, since when were computers entirely logical....

At the moment, having tried disabling the NIC (which is built into the main
board), I'm trying for a few days without AVG antivirus. That's the next
link in the chain to try.

Interesting. I had another freeze but it lasted only two minutes and wasn't
anywhere near as complete as before.

It looks to me as though something's buggered up something in the registry
relating to the internet/network gateway - pretty much as I already
suspected.

But now, the internet connection icon has vanished! Parts of the system
think they're still online and other parts don't.

It looks very much as though Outpost did something nasty in the regsitry as
previously suspected. Now I have to find out what!

Actually, it's looking like formatting the hard drive and reinstalling
Windows is the only viable option. Everything relating to networking and
internet connection seems buggered. I blame that piece of ****, Outpost.

Come to think of my problems started when i installed the advanced
networking pack from the windows update page. hmm maybe it did not agree
with something on my computer. i have since uninstalled the advanced
networking pack. I seem to be running fine for now.
