I just upgraded my O.S. to Windows XP Professional - 64 bit and have already
encountered some problems.
Could someone give me some sound professional advice, please!

After installing the 64 bit Xp Pro O.S. onto a new hard drive I could not
install my anti-virus program (it states it isn't compatible with XP 64 bit).
Am I going to get this from many other programs?

Next ,I can't get the 64 bit OS to recognize my 56 k modem, the "Found new
Hardware Wizard" doesn't recognize the modem. I tried another modem and the
OS found it but couldn't find a driver, which is a problem I never
encountered with the 32 bit version of Win. XP Pro.
Firstly I'm wondering if someone can help me to get the modem installed and
get standard drivers and get the driver list into the 64bit Xp Pro. system.
I'm thinking that this version has very few drivers.

Secondly maybe someone can point me in the direction of Good anti-vius
software that will work with the 64 bit OS. (free anti-virus until I can buy
anti-virus would be really nice).

Next maybe someone can give me sound advice as to problems with the 64 bit
XP Pro. OS and fixes if there are fixes.

Before upgrading an o/s you ascertain whether your current hardware will
run, so currently it looks like you need a new modem and AV software
Avast has a free offering

You did not say what version you are running but XP Pro x64 has a service
pack 2 which you should download and install. Look for:
WindowsXP-KB914961-SP2-x64-ENU.exe

Since windows XP has no "upgrade" you probably will have problems...
One cannot or should'nt up grade from xp home to xp pro,i dont think
xp 32bit to xp 64 bit is recommended,you should do a clean install of xp 64,
not upgrade to...

In general, you'll see this with those programs that, like anti-virus
programs, need to install virtual device drivers to function.

A 64-bit operating system requires 64-bit drivers for all hardware
components and peripherals. The availability of such drivers is
normally confirmed *before* making the decision to change the OS.
You'll need to contact the manufacturer of your modem to determine
whether or not 64-bit device drivers are available for it.

You'd first have to tell us what other problems you're having, other
than lacking device drivers and an incompatible AV program.

You accidentally got one sort of right, Andrew. In point of fact, it
is technically impossible to perform an in-place upgrade from a 32-bit
OS to a 64-bit OS; so a clean installation is required. Since the OP
already has WinXPx64 already installed, that's clearly what he did.

Upgrading from XP Home to Pro is easily done. But it's rarely needed.
The two systems are nearly identical, the main difference is that Pro
can connect to a domain and Home cannot. So it's rarely worth the
money and trouble to do the upgrade.

On the other hand, there is no upgrade path from a 32-bit system to a
64-bit system, in any configuration. You'd have to install the 64-bit
OS from scratch and reinstall all your apps.
