I don't get it. What the hell use is it in a laptop CPU? Is Turion 64 X2
really that much of a different animal from its desktop cousins?

Well, the publication its called Laptoplogic, so that might have
something to do with it. They're a bit more focused on the mobile
parts. It's probably there on all of the new Rev F chips, including the
new AM2 desktop parts.
