I'm looking for help with the same issue...but everything's been fine until
now. What would have all of sudden changed that would result in this error
message. I hadn't changed any settings and have been using the same ISP.

Hard to say without knowing any configuration information.
Either way, try enabling authentication for your smtp server.

Thanks - I actually got it working again by changing my outgoing SMTP setting
to "use same settings as my incoming mail server" as opposed to the "log on
to incoming mail server before sending mail option" choice. The latter had
been working for many months, but today it all of a sudden stopped. Still
can't figure out what happened, just glad it's working! I use Charter for my
internet, but have an e-mail account through my company which is hosted
outside of Charter. I've had a few issues with this before, but wondered
what changed today? Oh well...mysteries of the universe and Microsoft!

It could very well be a change at the hosting side.
The "use same settings as my incoming mail server" is the most commonly used
setting when authentication is required.
