I've been running Outlook 2003 forever on my Windows XP Professional computer
and all of a sudden, about two weeks ago, whenever I attempt to send an email
I get this relaying denied, proper authentication required error. I haven't
installed anything new other than security updates.....I'm very careful about
this. I can receive all my email, even SPAM, but can't send any. I've
checked my settings with my service provider (sover.net) and they are all
correct. I've also checked everywhere on line that I could think of to find
a solution. Nothing. Can someone help? I'm just about to huck this
computer right out the window. Thank you, Debbie

Are you logged onto your ISP when trying to send or are you using a third
party SMTP server?

POP3 is for receiving, SMTP is for sending.

OK, learn something new every day. In my case, both are the same, as they
should be according to my ISP.

Both are not the same . Call your ISP and speak to someone that knows what they are doing. Let the person walk you through the setup of your email account

As an example only

For receiving
it is
POP.email.com

For sending
It is
SMTP.email.com

It is entirely possible to have the same FQDN for POP3 and SMTP servers;
i.e.:

Incoming mail server (POP3): 'mail.example.net'
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): 'mail.example.net'

The server can sort out which protocol to use (POP3, or SMTP) by the port
being accessed (port 110/995, or port 25/465/587).

Do you have "My server requires authentication" checked in the account
properties?

As an example:

| C:\Documents and Settings\User>telnet mail.sover.net 110
| Connecting To mail.sover.net...
| +OK POP3 Ready seymour.sover.net 0001ee04
| quit
| +OK QUIT
|
|
| Connection to host lost.

| C:\Documents and Settings\User>telnet mail.sover.net 25
| Connecting To mail.sover.net...
| 220 mailgate6.sover.net ESMTP Sendmail 8.14.1/8.14.1; Sun, 28 Sep 2008 22:28:57
| -0400 (EDT)
| quit
| 221 2.0.0 mailgate6.sover.net closing connection
|
|
| Connection to host lost.

Looks like 'sover.net' uses the same FQDN for both POP3 and SMTP.

Sovernet does use mail.sover.net for both POP and SMTP. This has been
working for 15 years. I checked their website and nothing has changed.
Server authentication is not required unless I'm logging in through another
ISP, which I'm not. Only thing that has changed are security updates for
Windows XP. I even uninstalled one that affected Outlook 2003, but I'm still
having the problem. I appreciate your input.
