50 % CPU load in PCPitstop?

I have used PcPitstop.com to test performance from time to time.

I was getting a perfect mark on Friday past, yet to-day I get 50% CPU load.
Yet I have not loaded any new programs, have always defragged the disks and
use Windows XP, SP1, 2.8 Ghz, 512 MB RAM. Cable modem

Any comments?

Ritter,

I'm assuming you're using a Hyper Threading Proc? If so, that's a reason
for the 50% load, with a non HT proc it would be 100%!

I'd go to PcPitstop.com's website and see if there other reports or problems
like yours there.

HyperThreading should have nothing to do with it. Since you actually
have to be a member or something it looks like, I can't really run it
and see what is up with it, but there are a few things that could affect
it. Installing new programs and defragging the hard drive aren't going
to affect your system load like that. Loading more programs to the
memory may, but not just storing them on the HD. For a good performance
program as well as suggestions on how to improve peformance, check out

Try checking for spyware/malware or viruses.

I always check for Mal- or Spyware with Spybot and Ad-aware. No problems
there.

I shall go to SiSandra.

I used to have that program a year or so ago.

Still confused since a few days earlier it did not indicate 50% load of CPU
at all.

Thanks in the meantime for advice.

PC Pit Stop www.pcpitstop.com suggests that ALL programs be
off when running tests. But if you have your anti-virus and
a software firewall and some other background programs that
you don't want to take the time to shutdown, you will see a
high CPU load. Also, disk read/write and connection speed
tests will be below actual performance.

It is a very useful site and the test do work. But they may
be more useful as a benchmark to see changes, rather than
actual performance since you are testing the whole Internet
to some degree.

I downloaded and ran SiSandra 2004, SP2b,followed a few suggestions like
turning off background, etc. but PCStop makes no difference, Still the 50 %
CPU load and a total score of 1144, vs. 1604 last Friday.

No Spy or Malware detected by Ad-=aware or Spybot Search and destroy.

All disks defragmented by Diskkeeper Professional version.

I am really confused why this happens.

I do have the windows XP firewall installed and also NOD32 Anti Virus
installed and running.
BUT - I had the same programs running last Friday and got a score of 1606,
now I got 1144 and 50% CPU Load. That is what is confusing to me.

Were there performance issues that caused you to do the
testing to begin with?
