Have installed XP with SP2 but the system does not recognise Sata II drive
above 137Gb. Have checked registry and there is no EnableBigLba in the
registry. I have reinstalled SP2 but to no avail.
Is there a simple solution out there please?

You might need to do a bios update to make the computer capable of
supporting hard drives above 137 GB (and SATA drives).

I believe you have to set LBA in your CMOS (BIOS) Settings. If there isn't
such a choice there, you may need to check into flashing an updated BIOS.
Check with your mfg site for the BIOS downloads and instructions.

longer used or needed.

When you say "the system," are you referring to Windows Explorer or
the Disk Management snap-in?

I must apologise to all who replied but, being a public holiday I'm afraid
grandchildren come first, second third and whatever number comes up;-).
The Bios does recognise the whole of the 320 gig drive but, for reasons
beyond my limited brain the OS (XP Pro) does not. SP2 is said to contain all
that was in SP1 including the EnableBigLba registry value. My copy of SP2
must obviously not have that. Trying to install SP1 is useless as the OS
refuses to instal a thoretical upgrade that is older than the current system!
KB 303013 does offer a method of installing the Lba using Sysprep but, being
unused to dickering with the Registry, I don't feel able to follow the
advice. I was hoping there would be a simple download that would solve my
problem otherwise I may just have to accept that I can use nothing above
137gig and buy another small drive.

Don't give up quite yet...

First of all forget about the EnableBigLba registry value. Manually
modifying the registry in this case is not the solution to your problem. And
forget about trying to install SP1 at this point.

You're absolutely certain your motherboard supports large-capacity disks,
yes? What is its make & model?

And you're absolutely certain that your XP OS contained SP2 at the time that
OS was installed onto your 320 GB SATA II HDD, yes? It's not possible that
at the time the XP OS was installed onto that HDD it did *not* contain SP2?
Or was that possible?

BTW, what is your SATA HDD's make & model?

By any chance, when you access Disk Management - is there any entry re that
HDD referring to "unallocated space"?

Anna, What a brilliant person you are! I'd never thought of looking in the
Disk Management Area of the Admin Tools. Did exactly as you suggested and lo
and behold there was the Disk0 showing 298.09GB and the 'Unallocated Space'.
Clicked on and formatted the space and all is now resolved. Many, many thanks
