Control Panel Add/Remove Applications says I have two big apps on my PC:
.NET Framework 2.0 SP1 (185MB)
.NET Framework 3.0 SP1 (245MB)

Is this really just 245MB with a confusing report or is it really a
total of 430MB? Wow.

I didn't need any .NET until recently when I installed two small-ish
open source apps; CDBurnerXP Pro 3 and Filezilla (ftp).


Can I uninstall 3.0 and see if these apps work with 2.0?

Can I uninstall e 2.0 and get 185MB back?

This is an old laptop that needs the disk space.

You need to know that the .NET versions do not appear to contain any
things from the previous versions. .NET 3 does not appear to
have .NET "functions" from versions 2 or 1 just like .NET 2 does not
have any thing from verison 1

If you have .NET 2 and 3, then the updates will be the whopping 430MB.

As I understand it, programs designed to require a .NET Framework are
designed specifically designed for one .NET. If your programs require just
version 2 or just 3, then you can remove one you don't need. If your
CDBurner and Filezilla require different .NETs, you'd need to keep both.

If you delete one or both .NETs that are required, your software won't
work. With luck, you should be able to check the docs for CDBurner and
Filezilla and see which .NET they require. Don't delete a needed .NET.

;-) At least you don't have .NET 1.1 or the newest 3.5 on your PC in
addition to 2 and 3!

Are you sure you have 'Runtimes' and not the developer edition which is much
larger.
My .Net 2 SP1 is only 66MB.

Is that for the downloadable distro file or for the size as installed?

I searched Microsoft.com and found a version that downloaded 66MB..


Is there an "offical link" for .NET downloads?

How can I tell if my machine has the SDK or the RT installed?

Thanks, everyone.

Uninstalling .NET appears to be a mess. Is there a hot tip for how to
do it?

I'll uninstall the two apps that I believe uses it, first. Is there
any way to see if there are any others?

That's 66MB for the installed size.
The download file is named NetFx20SP1_x86.exe (23.6MB)

For developers .Net is identified by the letters 'SDK':

Note the difference in the file download size (354MB) vs (23.6MB)
