will 400Mhz PC3200 memory run at 333Mhz for Opteron 242 CPUs?

Hi All,

I had ordered PC3200 memory for the Opteron 242 by mistake instead of the
PC2700 memory (246 and above use the 3200).
I am still waiting for other parts to come in and was hoping I did not have
to exchange the PC3200 memory for the PC2700 as I would have to pay a hefty
restocking fee to do so.
The memory is Corsair number: CM72SD512RLP-3200
Memory Specs:
512MB DDR, PC3200, ECC, 64Mx72, 32Mx8 DRAMS, 184-pin, registered, CAS 3. LOW
PROFILE FOR DUAL PROCESSOR BASED MOTHERBOARDS. LOW PROFILE

Running all of this on a Tyan 2882 Pro dual Opteron mobo and wanted to be
certain this could be done without any problems (I don't like experimenting
on expensive mobos).

Anyone have any experience with running PC3200 mem as PC2700?

Thanks!

MC

It shouldn't be a problem, the CPU will run it at 333MHz if that's the
maximum speed that it's capable of running at. Putting in faster memory
should improve your timing margins which will improve your reliablity.

PC3200 suppots bus speeds up to 200MHz DDR400. PC2700 supports 166MHz
DDR333. This is a max official speed rating, not a minimum rating, so it
run at any rate as long as it doesn't exceed 200MHz (athough many will
run faster than rated)

That's good. less likely of having problems with weak PC2700 ram.

Thanks guys,
Now if I could just find a 1U cooling fan that actually fits a 1U chassis
(Dynatron's do not, unfortunately)
