May as well get your opinion here also:

P4 2.4/800
p4p800 deluxe
512mb/ 2700
3 hard drives
cd burner
2x/4x agp card
pci modem
floppy

Is the 400 enough for it? From what I've been reading it has 18V on the
+12 and I guess that is the most important thing so the cpu has juice.
One review I read said the 330 wasn't enough so I have no problem
upgrading to the 400 for 80 bucks at best buy when they open tomorrow at 8am

That can't be right. 400 quality watts should be plenty.

I don't know how good that review was but quote:

The TruePower still produces a respectable amount of power on each rail,
but not a lot of power on the +12V. The dedicated +3.3V rail will
benefit AMD users, particularly overclockers; but beware of the
extremely modest +12V rail. If you are running a high end video card,
or an Intel Pentium 4, this power supply simply will not produce enough
juice.

I hope it has 18 Amps on the +12 vdc line and NOT what you said! ;-)

I just checked my Antec 400 Watt P/S and it is indeed 18 Amp capacity on the
12 vdc output.

For what you have in your system the Antec 400 watt should be fine.

BTW: The Antec 400 watt P/S is $60 plus $6 shipping at NewEgg and maybe no
tax as well. If you can wait a few days for it to arrive you might want to
consider getting it there. That Best(?) Buy price is MSRP and I have to
wonder what is *Best* about that price!

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask
the right questions.

got the 400 watt supply....says invalid system disk so it's the ide
cable loose or something. I will have to diagnose when I get back
sunday. Also I have to move all the HD because the cables are smashed up
against the cpu. I guess a full tower is a good thing now 1 of 3 of
the HD show up in the setup and the chip and ram show up correctly so
that means my board is OK right?

You're right to doubt the validity of Anandtech's review because no
testing was done at full load, which is the bare minimum requirement
for an adequate power supply test.

Anandtech is also unjustified in its conclusion that the +12V capacity
is modest because they simply didn't test it, and frankly the whole
review resembles the nonsense sometimes published by snake oil
salesmen when they try to convey a sense of scientific objectivity.

Ignore pretentious charlatans like Anandtech. Tom's Hardware
performed much better testing, although they should have provided
details of the individual voltage outputs at various loads. Silent PC
Review does publish such information but unfortunately doesn't test
beyond the manufacturers' maximum ratings, meaning there's no way to
tell if the supplies will be damaged on overload.

400W is far more than your system will consume, and actually a good
300W supply should be more than adequate for it. But if your
motherboard runs the CPU from the +12V line, as almost all Pentium 4
and even most newer Athlon motherboards do, look for a supply capable
of putting out at least 15A at +12V (actual capacity is not always the
same as the official rating) so that you'll have at least 5A left over
to run all of those disk drives. Antec is a good brand, but their
SLxxx product line doesn't seem to be as underrated as their
Truepowers. Some brands that are as good are Truepowers are Powerman,
Fortron, Sparkle, Hi-Q, Trend, Aopen, Power-Q, and Powertech (not
Powertek), all made by Fortron-Source Power, some available very
cheaply from www.newegg.com and www.directron.com. Any of their 350W
models will be more than adequate for your system, but if you need
something stronger, opt for the 530W model since it costs only very
slightly more than their 400W model.

I've recently read of higher power Antec Truepowers popping
capacitors, a problem that affected many of them about 2 years ago,
and this may be due to a run of bad capacitors (but I've seen them
with the same brand capacitors as theirr better competitors use) or a
design that allows too much current to flow just after turn-on.

You quoted a review for the 330W Antec. Not what he asked for.

400W is plenty for his setup.
