Hi, I have tried to repair an old computer which would not allow a hard drive above 32gb. I managed to set the 40 gb hard to 31 gb by the jumpers, but was unsuccessful with the computer. I have now tried to get the hard drive back to its original capacity i.e. 40 gb. I have tried the Maxtor powermax program but it still comes back as 31gb. Was this a permanent reduction in size,? or is there another way of re-establishing its original capacity. It is a Maxtor AS40. I am running Win xp Pro. Thanks for any help.

Are you formatted in Fat32? With Windows XP you can only
format up to 32 gigs with Fat32. If you want to have the
full 40gb either format the drive with a 98/Me startup
disk or format using NTFS file system.
