3C905C-TX network card problems, accessing Internet

Hello,

We just recently purchased a number of 3COM PCI 10/100 cards to
replace some older 10Mbps cards also 3COM. I have noticed something
strange with these cards: after installing them, I cannot get the machine
to get internet access. This has happened on three different machines,
one of them WinXP, one Win98SE, and one Windows NT 4.0 workstation.

Our network consists of a small LAN on a 10mbps network. I have forced the
cards to run in 10MBps half duplex mode due to our cabling.

What is strange is that I can ping other computers on the network okay,
even ping and telnet to the DSL router.

However, when I try a ping to microsoft.com, it will resolve the address
okay: pinging microsoft.com [207.46.245.222] okay, but then the request
will time out.

I think there is something inherently strange with these cards. Or perhaps
do I need to change an advanced setting in the network card properties?

Any ideas or hints would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Mike McWhinney

Not all servers will respond to pings.
I can't get a response from microsoft.com either.
Do you get a response when you ping www.yahoo.com?

HTH,
John

Mike,

Try setting the cards to auto negotiate the network connect speed. This may
be your problem. Some network cards don't play nice with switches and the
auto negotiation might solve it.
