I have been trying to solve this problem for two days at
least now and am not keen on backing up my important
files and re-formatting my HD. Particualarly as some
people ahve tried this and it still hasn't solved the
problem.

I have removed all the peripheral cards except the
graphics card. I have disconnected my USB keyboard and my
PS2 mouse and I'm still in the loop.

I'll have a look to see if I can disable the two USB
ports I cannot remove as they are attached to the
motherboard.

I've read the article on 'How to slipstream Hotfixes that
replace pre-existing driver files' but it looks very
complicated and more for a systems administrator than a
home user.

My HD is 40 Gb and I'm using FAT32 filing system because
I have a dual-boot setup with Windows ME, which I need
for my current scanner. I can still get in via Windows ME
so I should be able to back up my most important files,
but I hope I won't have to go down that route.

In theory it should be possible to send a request for
help from Microsoft support, but I have been unable to do
this as the box for the Product Identification (PID) is
too short for the 25 characters that XP PIDs are.

Catch 22?
