I am in the process of upgrading my current system. I had to put in a
replacement motherboard which got things rolling. I have an Abit KV7
(400mhz capable) with an old 1.0 Athlon XP and PC 2700 Ram. Here is my
dilemma-I want to upgrade the processor.
-Do I just buy a Barton 333mhz 2500 for 75.00 or spend the money to jump to
the 400mhz FSB 3000 for 138.00. (Newegg seems to be the only one selling a
3000 400 mhz vs the common 3200???)
-Do I need to upgrade my RAM toPC 3200 immediately?
-Is the 400mhz processor going to give me that much better performance?
-In connection with these choices if I do buy the 2500 Barton 333 where can
I find comprehensive info on overclocking. I have no experience in this
area.

Your help in sorting this out is appreciated.

Forget about overclocking. It should only be attempted by people who are
extremely knowledgeable about hardware, and don't care if they shorten the
life expectancy of their motherboard, CPU AND OTHER COMPONENTS.

You can use either CPU with your current RAM. It will work just fine. If
you can really get the 400MHz 3000 processor for just a little more than the
333MHz 2500, I know I'd choose the faster processor. Be aware that in
real-world usage, you probably won't notice much of a difference between
them, though. -Dave

At 1.0GHz there was just an Athlon (thunderbird), Athlon XP (palomino)
started at 1333MHz, aka XP1500+ (should be comparable to non XP at 1500MHz)
In any case, jumping from a 100MHz/DDR FSB non XP (no SSE, 256KB L2 cache)
to 133MHz/DDR FSB (or higher) XP model, at almost twice the Megahertz, and
possiblly double cache, would benefit you in such a pronounced way that the
differences between 166 to 200 FSB or 3000+ to 3200+ performance rating are
almost negligible.
And you will see the differences btween PC2700 and PC3200 DDR-RAM more
pronounced with the higher clocked CPU (clock AND FSB). It really depends on
what is your actual bottleneck (right now, CPU) for your application.
