32-bit PCI software modem not working properly in 64-bit motherboards?

I had 2 Winmodems (1 Lucent chipset, 1 Conexant) not working reliably in
those new 64-bit motherboards that have both PCI and PCIe slots. They
kept disconnecting every 1-2 minutes without a good reason.

Is this expected behavior? Would there be new generation of dial-up
modem in the near future?

No it isn't expected behaviour. The fact a motherboard runs a 64bit CPU
is irrelevent.

Try a different PCI slot. Also, make sure you have the
correct driver for whatever OS your computer is running.

Many of the more recent dial-up modems, such as the
Rosewill RNX-56USB, are external modems that plug
into a USB port.
