Hi marc,
try it you'll soon find out. Most everyone needs to be on
sp3 nowadays to receive updates,
I installed this update this morning without any hiccups

Nope. SP2 is now out of lifecycle with no updates allowed.

No, even a manual install will fail.

Support for WinXP SP2 ended on 13 July 2010. Computers running WinXP SP2
"will no longer receive software updates from Windows Update" [i.e., updates
released on & after 02 August 2010] until SP3 has been installed. Extended
Support for WinXP SP3 will continue through 08 April 2014.

. What does it mean if my version of Windows is no longer supported?

Why would anyone still be Windows XP with Service Pack 2 this far in?

Probably FUD.

I resisted until the pc started acting up about something irrelevant to
updating. Thought was and still is "Why chance mucking up a good working
system."

If it is a "good working system" - SP3 will not change that. It may point
out the flaws in that logic (just because there are no visible symptoms
doesn't mean everything is well), but if the logic was sound from the
beginning - it's just about a hour of your time so you have a updated and
supported system.

Silly boy! If SP3 isn't installed, it not a "good working system" (or soon
won't be).
