i have an old internal 3,5 disc drive
my new computer has no 3.5 drive
can i use this old drive somehow as an external 3.5 drive?
or what can i use it for besides a paperweight?

You can buy an external drive enclosure. Check out newegg.com for a
variety of options.

i would have to say paperweight. you'll have better luck just purchasing
a usb floppy drive and plus they're not all that expensive.

You could use a 5.25" to 3.5" bay adapter like in the
following link (only an example, Google search for more) if
you had a spare 5.25" bay, but it also depends on how "old"
the old drive is... if you dont' except long life out of it
then you might find it more useful to buy another drive if
you need one.

USB externals are another option, but frankly it can be
cumbersome to have a lot of devices dongled off of a PC by
usb or any other cords, given the choice I'd always keep all
drives in same system. If your system is of a newer silver
or grey color, automotive vinyl dye does a fair job of
painting the beige colored bay faceplaces like in above
picture, to match the case better. The vinyl dye resists
scrapes and chipping much more and no prep work is necessary
beyond washing the piece first.

Above I should've written silver or black... you might find
grey or other colors but there are certainly fewer colors of
vinyl dye stocked at local stores I've seen. Online you may
find more color options.

It shouldl also be mentioned that the dye is only
appropriate for plastics, not metal. Not "all" plastics but
most everything used for cases, front bezels or drive
faceplates, etc, seem to take it well enough. I have no
idea if it would work ok for unusual or atypically-painted
(per PC cases) types such as polypropylene or polycarbonate
or plexiglass.
