my neighbour is having trouble with his winxp, rebooting immediately and
constantly. I installed a 2nd copy of winxp and that one boots, though
doesnt recognise any programmes installed on the old setup. There are no
files such as 'my documents' either. Where will these be as surely they
would be there if the old windows booted?

TIA for an answer

You will need to re-install your neightbour's applications. Most of them
won't run properly with the method you used.

When you open a Command Prompt then the command

set user{Enter} will show you the parent directory of the "My Documents"
folder.

Using windows explorer look in "c:\documents and settings" there you should
see the previous login name and you can copy the files to the new user "my
documents" as philo suggests.
