I purchased a Dell 8300 r(P4 w/ Win XP Pro, NTFS)recently
with a single SEAGATE ST3120026AS 120GB SERIAL ATA HD
7200 RPM 8.5MS 3.5LP BARRACUDA 7200.7 SATA. After a
sudden HD failure Dell replaced the original HD. I
decided to purchase another identical Seagate HD and PCI
RAID controller for a RAID 1 setup. I hooked up the old
failed HD to the second SATA port on the mother board and
was able to recover all of the data that had not been
backed up. Theis proved that the second serial cable,
power cable, and the port on the MB were functioning (the
old hard drive still had issues but I had my data and
didn't care). I then installed the new drive. My computer
refuses to recognize the drive (not seen by "My computer
or by disk management). I've tried a variety of settings
in SETUP (I'm no expert). Normally I would expect this to
be a simple plug and play plus at most a disk formatting
step. Along the way I've tried lots of cable and MB port
swithing and swapping. I even tried installing the RAID
controller and using both the old original drive and the
new drive as the mirror drive. It seemed to work with the
old original but not the new. The error message I get
back is that the disk is not initialized. I am not given
the option to perform an initialization step (I'm not
familiar with the term "initialize"). Sorry about the
length of this post (I'm new to this) but after reading
back through six weeks of posts, it seems that a lack of
info results in vague answers.

Tahnks in advance,
Bob

When Dell installed the new drive or replaced it, did
they relaod windows on the new drive for you, also
is the new drive working, you said that you added a second drive
so at this point, your having an issue with drive2 and not
drive 1 is this correct

Yes, the new drive had windows preinstalled. The local
tech put the drive in place and rebooted the machine. It
then took a while (maybe 30 min or so) for the machine to
be available.

also
>is the new drive working, you said that you added a

second drive

I puchased a new drive over the web that was identical to
the original one that failed and to the new one supplied
by Dell and installed by the local tech. The only thing
the new drive I puchased does is consume power and
disipate heat. It was listed as an OEM item and came with
nothing but the drive. Luckily the PCI RAID card I
purchased at the same time came with two serial cables
which allowed me to do a lot of swapping and testing. As
I noted before, even the original faild drive had enough
functionality that I was able to run it along with the
new Dell supplied drive and recover some data.

Yes, drive 1 is working well. Even the RAID card
eventually installed.
