I have a laptop using WinXP and a desktop using Win98 SE.
Both are placed in different rooms and are capable of
accessing the internet by dial-up separately and have no
problem in doing so.

Recently i had networked my desktop(Win98) with my laptop
(WinXP) for a while to tranfer some files over. However a
problem arises after this.

The situation on my computers now:
1) Desktop(Win98)- i can still get a connection to the
internet on my Win98 computer which shows there's a slight
internet activity in receiving and sending data but when i
open up IE it can't seem to open up any sites and it stop
totally after a few seconds. This applies to my other
internet programs as well. Strangely it is as if i did not
connect to the internet at all.

2) Laptop (WinXP)- I can still get an internet connection
on my laptop like normal and opening up sites is not a
problem.

My computing knowledge is really limited so any help or
ideas is greatly appreciated. Now i'm just short of
reformatting my Win98 desktop and reinstalling it

How did you assign the IP address on the network card that connect Win98 to
the XP machine?
Check using Start, Run, Winipcfg/all and select the network card?
If the network card has a 169.254.x.y address, it's OK.

Otherwise remove the default gateway from that network card (Control
Panel/Network/Properties of TCP/IP bound the the network card, gateway
tab).

Or better yet, enable ICS on the modem connection in XP and share the
dialup connection between both XP and Win98.
