I put a 2nd PATA, formated HDD in, detected by BIOS, but it's not detected by
XP Home (SP2, new install), and I am hoping that someone has some clues.

The HDD in question is okay and formatted NTFS and is detected on another PC
(but XP Pro). Since it is detected by the BIOS I assume the cable is okay.

I also took yet another HDD, formated FAT32, and it too is not detected by
the XP Home PC!

I'll try a new cable next, but doubt that is the problem. The MOBO is a new
PC Chips (I think; the PC is not nearby at the moment).

Tips on checking PATA settings in Device Manger perhaps will be helpful?

Check the drives jumper recommendations when using two drives. If the drive
are made by the same manufacturer, usually this means the primary (boot)
drive is the Master and the second drive jumper is set to Slave. If you have
two different manufactures you may need to try different jumper settings
(especially for the second drive) till you find one that works.

Right click on My Computer and select Manage. On the following screen,
click on Disk Management.

When it appears on the right hand side of the screen, assign it a drive
letter.

Yes, jumpers checked.

Um.... The thing is, is that the HDD is not detected by XP. I.e. it does not
show up in the Disk Manager.

Yes and yes.

The BIOS detects the drive. Other XP's detect the drive. If I boot off the
XP CD, it detects the drive.

If I boot XP normally (off the 1st drive) the 2nd drive is not detected by XP.

Does it show in Device
Manager?

I am not near the computer right now, but I think it was.

But before I start fooling around with device instances and/or device maps
(if this is possible) I need more knowledge.
