2nd HDD connection problem

I use Win XP and installed a 2nd HDD. They are both connected via the same
ribbon connector with 2 plugs. I had problems with the OS detecting the new
HDD drive when I connected it to the 2 plug ribbon lead and so disconnected
the HDD and used the port and single ribbon lead previously used by the CD
and it worked, but I now have no CD. I have connected the jumper on the HDD
to cable select, but it does not work when connected to the two plug ribbon
cable. I have tried anther ribbon led but it does not work either. Am I
doing something wrong?

Original (first) hard drive should be connected
to the last (end connector - black in color) and set/jumpered to "Cable
Select"

The 2nd (new) hard drive should be connected to the middle (gray)
connector and also set/jumpered to "Cable Select"

Note: If both hard drives are made by the same manufacture then
you can also try setting/jumper the old drive as "Master" or "Master with
Slave"
The new drive should then be jumpered as "Slave"

When using 'Cable Select' on one drive you *must* use it on the other - i.e.
*both* drives must have jumpers set to 'CS'

If one is set to 'MA' and the other to 'CS' the system may not 'see' one or
either of them at all!

Otherwise, using 'Master' and 'Slave' is more precise as you can go
'against' the position on the two-plug ribbon. - If you use 'Cable Select'
and a two-plug ribbon, the system will *select* which is the slave and which
is the master automatically based on their position on the cable.

You are better off defining them.

On top of the common jumper settings for Western Digital Drives, there's one
more factor.

If you're trying to get a Western Digital Drive and a Maxtor drive of ide
connection type on same cable, may not be possible.

That's what I thought. I didn't think there should be any reason why a
device from one manufacturer (or of a particular model) shouldn't work with
another! You may have a HD with full capacity not being recognised but
that's a different issue.

Drive brands are irrelevant, Master/Slave or cable select can be used with
any drive mfg combination, can't imagine why you think otherwise.

Try a Maxtor in combination with a WDC drive and
then you can imagine.
