The problem is the Internet is fast becoming an essential service (not as important as water/elec/gas), but along the same sort of lines as TV. When some people have 100Mbps connections in cities and others have 56k connections in towns there is a speed difference of almost 1800x. This means you can't deliver uniform services to everyone, even though we all still pay for it (iplayer, online banking, etc...). If the infrastructure is put in to place then it would be a big step forward for people living in remote parts of the country.

Yes, there are lots more important things to tackle - but this development will have more implications than you highlighted for 14 year olds

I'm quite surprised that they didn't push mobile broadband more, as that's coming down quite rapidly in price and that would kill 2 birds with one stone in rural areas (net connection and 3G).

I don't think I could afford it.

I suppose it depends which one you use. I used to have 3 modem, payed £25 per month for 15 gig download, and depending on what time of day could get upto 4.5mb download speed. I have tried all the others, and they all seem to expensice and its a bit hit and miss if you get good signal, depending where you are. Also 3 was the easiest to set up using Linux....

Hi folks,
After last nights tests on speedtest.net i decided t o look for app's that might help boost speeds a bit.

I found a little prog called internet booster and decided to give it a go. My speed has been cut in half so i'm a bit disappointed to say the least. Why couldn't i just leave things alone...
Anyway after a lot of playing around i have decided to uninstall it but am left wondering how do i rectify my situation...i hope i can fix it cos its well slow tonight now.

Those boosters are a waste of time Zed... As for your speed been lower today, well thatis probably due to mor people been online at the moment...Have a look at this link for a better undrstanding. Also don't just use one site to speed test. There are a few otther good ones. And in my opinion, Speedtest.net is not the most reliable..I've done tests and had readings show well over 50mb and I only have 8mb line...so youfigure it out...

Well yeah some broadband companies in my opinion are total rip offs, but also remeber when you choose a company they will tell you you will get a speed " upto " whatever the speed is of the package you are using....Sometimes you may get the full speed, other times not...Such is life. And why do I keep repeating thatsaying today...Its in me head and I can't get it out...

Hi folks,
I just thought i'd add this little snippet i found just now....i thought it was apt for this thread
Try Flashgot, the integrated download manager for Firefox

Even if you are running a fully up-to-date computer and have access to a high speed broadband, a download manager could still improve your download speeds and the reliability of your connection. Download managers will separate files into smaller pieces in order do download and manage them more efficiently than a single, larger file. Another benefit of using a download manager is that most of them enable you to resume broken connections and incomplete files.

Flashgot 1.1.9.8
is a download manager for Firefox that enables users to easily handle single or multiple file download. It ships with the usual download manger features such as the ability to resume downloads after your Internet connection is lost or broken and is incorporated with your browser so there's no need to run a separate download manager. Downloads can also apply to media files on the web, so you can download music and similar files to your desktop.

I took it from vnunet or v3 as its now known.
