Hello all.
I have this odd situation on a home lan I look after for the better
half's family.
I have 2 PC's attached to a Netgear RP 614 Internet Router. Both run W2K
and both are able to access each others shares and so on. One machine
however cannot see the internet. This problem has just arisen recently
and the 2 PCs had been motoring along fine until now.
Here are all the thing I know and have tested so far (in no particular
order):
-Connected a third PC at the same time to see if its a Router issue IE
can the router handle more than one PC connect to the net at once. - Yes
-Hard reset and reconfigured the router
-Replaced the NIC
-Uninstalled/Re-installed the TCP/IP Protocol
-Ensured all network/Internet settings are the same on both PC's
-Tested using both IE and Firefox
-The router has a browser based configuration that the problematic PC
can't access although it can Ping it
-I noticed that the dud PC's DHCP seems to be a problem because when
DHCP is enabled windows kicks in the 'Autocofiguration IP Address' in
ipconfig. When this happens it can't see anything else on the network
and nothing can see it either. (IP address out of range most likely?? I
dunno and this is why I reinstalled the TCP/IP protocol)
-I set a static IP address on the PC and reserved a spot for it on the
Router. (now I have it networked ok but still no Inet)
I wonder about perhaps some effect from virus because although AV
software is on there full scans aren't run regularly enough. Plus the
users don't know what to look out for when surfing.
My suspicions tell me that it me have something to do with how this PC
is managing Http because I can't see the net or even the admin software
of the router. Unfortunately there are no traditional email accounts to
use to test this theory (I took em off and made 'em use web based).
What I don't know is how I might refresh whatever it is that windows
uses to manage http. But this is all just theory...
Anyone got any ideas??
TIA
Mr. Smith.
