2k DNS updates and user lists

I have spent a few days now trying to figure out two problems on a new
2k server I am setting up. The server is running a new domain called
CURRICULUM.

The first problem I had was in the logs, it was moaning that "Dynamic
registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records failed
because no DNS servers are available.". I had set up the DNS server on
this new server to host its own records and forward to the other DNS
servers for anything else. I have since tried deleting the DNS domain
and both recreating on its own DNS server and on another one, but
neither of the times do any actual details get put in by the server
(though it has stopped moaning except when it is booting up). I could
live with the origional moans in the log as the DNS appeared to work,
if it wasn't for the second problem, which most results from google
seem to suggest a DNS issue (though it's none of the ones suggested).

The second problem (and the issue stopping roll out) is with getting
lists of users which should appear through a trust. The new server is
set up to trust another domain, and by selecting the right domain from
the drop down on the logon screen, it is possible for users from the
trusted domain to log in. The problem comes when I try to assign rights
to files on the new server. I go to add, change to the trusted domain,
and get the error "Cannot display objects from this location because of
the following error: The server is not operational."

I have tried everything that has been suggested in my searches and a
few other things but can't figure this out and I am being pestered by
my boss that the server needs to go into operation. Any help, pointers,
cyanide pills, etc, would be greatly appreciated.

An update:

I've fixed the DNS issue, turns out SP4 doesn't like single level
domains. I had assumed we had SP4 on the server at the other end of the
trust too (which is also running a domain with a single level name),
turns out its SP1 which allows single level domains.

But I still have the second problem where I get the error "Cannot
display objects from this location because of the following error: The
server is not operational."

OK, turns out i needed SP4 on both servers. Unfortunatly I now seem to
have a hardware or driver issue on the server which had SP1, which with
SP4 cause the server to grind to a halt after a certain amount of work.
