Same with Catalyst 8.10 and 8.11.
The solution was that I tried a Radeon 4650 that I borrowed from a
friend. With that I got 2560x1600 under Windows (although the display
was corrupted when first switching to that resolution; after resetting
and rebooting the computer it worked).
After doing my testing with that card I put in the X1650Pro again; in
both directions I just changed the hardware and did not do anything
with the drivers; the X1650Pro came up with 1920x1200, even though I
had not switched back from 2560x1600 before switching the cards.
Supreme Commander ran with the truee 2560x1600 (no peephole) I had
last used on the 4650. And then I also switched the desktop
resolution to 2560x1600, and it worked, too.
My guess is that the driver used with the X850XT left some registry
setting that did not go away even through deinstallations and
reinstallations of drivers, nor with driver upgrades. I also guess
that that setting did not make sense with the 4650, so the driver (or
CCC) threw it out, and now that setting does not affect the X1650Pro
any more. I guess the classical cureall of reinstalling Windows might
also have helped; or better: let an expert have a go at the registry.
BTW, the 4650 is incredibly power-efficient. In my usage, it used
about 10W (Windows idle) to 30W (Windows gaming) less than the 1650Pro
(which in turn consumes 3W (idle) to 35W (Windows gaming) less than
the X850XT.
