Hello,

I have a 250 gig Maxtor External Hard Drive. I've recently upgraded from
Windows ME to Windows XP home edition, (my XP disc is two years old). When I
click on the external drive letter k, I get the message: parameters are not
correct. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive and it still
does not work. Please advise.

Thank you.

To see/use a disk larger than about 137Gig, you need to have the following:

1. BIOS that can handle it
2. XP SP-1 or later
3. 48-bit LBA enabled in XP.

The BIOS issue is something to check in your motherboard manual, or contact
the motherboard maker (or PC maker, if a factory-made PC).

Here is a link about 48-bit LBA:

Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 1, 1a or 2 installed and is 48bit LBA
turned on? Without at least SP1 Windows XP can't see a drive larger than
137 GB.

See here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp
(watch word wrap)

Since this drive is an external (USB or FireWire) the computer's internal
bios is inmaterial as to whether the machine can see the drive as the USB or
Firewire adapter's built in bios in the external device is used to access
the drive.
