When I close a profile, I cannot open another one without logging in/out. If
I don't log out the currently open profile will not close

I wonder how you "close a profile"?
Just quit Outlook and open it again, choosing a diffrent profile...

Perhaps you don't understand the word 'close'? If I exit Outlook from, say,
Profile A I should be able to click on the Outlook icon again, and be offered
a screen asking me to choose which profile to open next.

However, when I 'close' Profile A and click again, no profile choice screen
opens. Outlook does not exit properly and still presents only Profile A. To
obtain, say, Profile B I must log off/out of Windows and start all over again.

Do you understand the word 'start'?

Regards

I like smart asses... "When I close a profile"...
You close Outlook, not the profile...
Or would you have a "CLOSE PROFILE" button that i don't have?

Anyways - since i came here to help, i'll be gentle
What version do you use?
Latest service pack installed?
Any add ins? - try to disable them...
Antivirus integration? - try to disable it aswell
After closing Outlook can you check wether the outlook.exe process is still
running? - you could kill it to avoid having to logoff / logon
