2007: Incoming email Disappears - Outgoing Name Problem

I just installed Office 2007 on Win XP. Prior to that I used Outlook Express
for email and was very pleased. However, Office 2007 deleted my Outlook
Express application, so I decided to import the email account settings,
email, and folders from Outlook Express into Outlook 2007. That import seems
to have worked well, however, I have 2 serious problems with Outlook 2007.

1.The only email in my inbox is from the import described above. When I
click Send/Receive, it works and I can see NEW email pop up in a small
window. However, when I close that small window, the email disappears. It
does NOT go into my inbox! Where is it going?

2.When I send email to certain addresses, Outlook will NOT send the message
saying it does NOT match a Name. However, other outgoing email works fine.

Does anyone have an explanation why the above is happening and a possible
solution?

Thanks,
Robert

Do you have a filter set on the view of your Inbox? For example, if you have
autopreview on and have mail set to be marked as read after X seconds, and
you filter to view only unread mail, this can cause the behaviour you're
seeing. Click on View > Current View and see if Messages is what's checked.
If not, change it to Messages and see if that corrects that issue.

As for the sending issue, is there an exact error message and/or number?

I don't think Outlook uninstalls Outlook Express since that is a component
of Internet Explorer.

Hi Kathleen:

Thanks for the prompt response.

1. I am not home, I'm at work so I don't know if there's a filter in place.
However, I can tell you that I did NOT create a filter. Maybe one was created
during the import?

2. If it is a filter issue, can I assume the messages are still there but I
just can't see them?

3. Yes, there is a specific error message when I try sending email to
certain addresses and I should have taken notes last night. I can tell you I
found the same issue in the knowledge base, but I didn't understand the cause
and/or the solution.

4. I'm sure you're correct, Outlook Express wasn't deleted. However, the
desktop/taskbar icons were deleted and I could no longer run the program from
the Start Menu or a desktop icon.

I will check and answer your questions when I get home after work.

Kathleen:

1. Current View is Messages.
2. An Auto Preview dialog box pops up showing new messages while they're
being downloaded, however, they never make it into my InBox.
3. The occasional problem with certain email messages failing comes up with
this dialog box message.

Outlook does not recognize one or more names.

Kathleen:

Per the MS Knowledge Base I deleted the Address Book which was allegedly
corrupt but that did not solve the Outlook does not recognize the name
problem.

I'm ready to give up on Outlook. I have no idea why messages aren't coming
to my Inbox.

Have you tried repairing your PST file? I think that scanpst.exe will do
this, do a file/folder search for it. When it comes up in the list,
double-click it and follow the instructions. It will ask you to browse to
your PST file so make sure you know where it's located. Also, Outlook must be
closed during this. If the scan finds any errors, when it's done run it
again. When the scan finds no further errors, when it's finished open Outlook
again.

No it didn't. Installing Outlook in no way affects the installation of
Outlook Express. It does, however, change the default mail program.

What view of the Inbox are you using? When you check the Unread Messages
folder, in what folder does Unread Messages say the new mail resides?

Hello Kathleen:

I ran scanpst.exe and it founds errors the first time. The 2nd time I ran
it, there were no errors. I opened Outlook and nothing changed.

A dailog box pops up and I can see my new messages. I have the option of
deleting them individually or clicking the OK button. When I click the OK
button, Outlook apparently deletes all of the new messages.

Hello Brian:

1. Inbox: \\Personal Foders
2. Unread Mail: No back slashes, just Personal Folders. I have a number of
old messages that I never ran.

When I click Send/Receive the Preview Messages before ? dialog box pops up.
I can delete messages or I can click the OK button. When I click OK, I never
again see my new messages. I'm not sure, but it looks like Outlook is
deleting them, but that doesn't make sense.

Maybe it's routing them somewhere other than the InBox. I think it's strange
that the location of the Inbox is \\PersonalFodlers. I would think that
should be the location for those folders I created on my local drive which
aren't part of my Outlook Mailbox. But what do I know?

Brian:

Whoooooooooooops............. I hit the Post button before finishing.

I have the following folder on my C: drive

C:\Documents and Settings\robert\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Within that folders are two files called:
Outlook.Pst with all of the my old messages that I imported from OE into
Outlook 2007.
I also have a Robert.Pst folder with virtually nothing in there.
