2003 trying to load non-existent file

When opening 2003 I receive the following message:

"The add-in "C:\Program Files\McAfee\Managed
VirusScan\VScan\OtlkUI.20080..." could not be installed or loaded. This
problem may be resolved by using Detect and Repair on the Help menu."

The file has been uninstalled but Outlook still tries to load it. I have
looked in "Add-In Manager" and it is not there. I have used "Detect and
repair" and that didn't help.

Any suggestions on how to have Outlook stop trying to load the file?

Locate extend.dat and rename it to .old

OK, tried that and still getting the message. Outlook rewrites the extend.dat
file. From reading http://www.msoutlook.info/question/19, it looks like the
entry may still be in the registry. Correct?

Correct, extend.dat is recreated from the registry information. If you also
had a toolbar with the buttons of the addin then you might also need to
reset outcmd.dat

You might also find references to the addin in either
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\AddIns
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins

No toolbar of the addin and I looked in those registry settings and nothing
there referencing a McAfee addin.

I wonder what would happen if I took extend.dat from another machine running
2003 that had the same addins listed in Addin Manager (Google Desktop Search
Outlook Addin and Exchange Extensions property pages)?

You would corrupt Outlook and probably crash it at startup.

Reset both extend.dat and outcmd.dat again while Outlook is closed. Use Task
Manager to verify that the process outlook.exe actually quits before doing
anything.
Also check Help-> About-> Disabled Items to see if it shows up there

Reset extend.dat and outcmd.dat again while Outlook was closed.
Checked Task Manager to verify that the process outlook.exe actually quit.
Started Outlook and got the "The add-in "C:\Program Files\McAfee\Managed..."
message again and checked the folders for extend.dat and outcmd.dat and they
were rewritten again.

What program do I check Help-> About-> Disabled Items for. It doesn't show
up as a menu item under Help in either Outlook or Task Manager.

This happened to me migrating my email files from my old XP machine to my new
Vista machine. The old machine had McAfee SonicWALL installed. There is a
file called extend.dat that resided in the Local Settings\Applications
Data\Microsoft\Outlook directory with my outlook and archive files. When I
copied the old outlook files to my new machine, I guess I also coppied the
extend.dat file as well. To fix this, I used Notepad to open the extend.dat
file that I moved to the new machine - there is a line C:\Program
Files\McAfee\Managed VirusScan\VScan\OtlkUI.20080514211134.dll that I
highlighted, removed, and saved. You have to do this while Outlook is not
running, otherwise you can't edit the file. After nremoving this line, the
silly message went away. I hope this helps you....

Looks like we're on the right track here. I opened extend.dat in Notebook but
all the data is in a single, long line. I tried deleting "I C:\Program
Files\McAfee\Managed VirusScan\VScan\OtlkUI.20080922130425.dll" that I found
there but I still get the error message. I figure Outlook may be rewriting
extend.dat because it found it corrupted because when I reopen the file, the
McAfee line is back in there.
