User has Word 2007 (12.0.6504.5000) SP2 MSO (12.0.6425.1000). He opens a
letterhead template with fields originally created in Word 2000 or 2002.
Compatibility Mode appears in the Title Bar. He adds his data, saves and
closes this new .docx file. When he tries to reopen this newly created file,
it gives him the error, "The file {filename} cannot be opened because there
are problems with the contents." Nothing will open this file include Recover
Text from Any File.

I have Word 2007 (12.0.4518.1014) MSO (12.0.6020.5000) which looks like a
more original version that the user has, yet I can use these same templates
and open the resulting files with no problem.

I tried renaming his normal.dot and making his Workgroup Templates location
a Trusted Location and neither made any difference. Can anyone shed any
light on this? This area has appx. 200 templates! TIA...

Have him set the default option to save in Word 97-2003 format and see if
that overcomes the issue.

Wouldn't that lose all your 2007 features?

Yes, saving in 97-2003 format does allow this user to open and use pre-2007
templates and open the resulting files. However, when he clicked on Insert
for one, I expected 2007 features to be inactive such as SmartArt. In fact,
he could not access Clip Art or Shapes, Bookmark, and lots of other stuff
that should be available.

Is there something with this SP2 that has broken his 2007 in some way?
Perhaps a Registry fix??? TIA...

I have similar issues however we can still open the docs, which just get
funny characters when printing again. Nobody has been able to help apart
from telling me to save them as 97-2003 versions. However, that defeats the
purpose of buying Office 2007 in the first instance - should of stuck with
Office 2003.
