I am using an evaluation copy of Windows 2000 Server, SP4.
As a networking student, I have a long way to go if I
can't solve a silly little problem such as this! The
cursor began to freeze on the screen, and now doesn't
appear at all after reboot. When I tab my way to the
mouse in Control Panel, hardware tab, there is no mouse
listed, so of course nothing happens when I select
properties. I swapped this generic mouse with another
that is know to work but nothing.
What is the best way to install a fresh driver?

I have learned here that when troubleshooting a problems,
the intermittent ones can be the biggest headaches! Turns
out that yes, the mouse was bad, even though I tested the
mouse on another machine, and then put it back on the
Server. It worked o.k. for a while and then the same
problem surfaced. It is curious how this causes the mouse
driver to simply disappear in the mouse properties of
control panel. The error I made was not rebooting the
server after swapping the mice.

You should always power down your machine before removing or adding a PS2
mouse. USB is OK to hot-swap, and serial mice are sometimes OK, but if you
do this with a PS2 mouse you can ruin your motherboard pretty easily.
