I have found that very often when I reinstall an image file of a system back
on to a pc (the one it was made on) when I attempt to logon as
administrator or another user I can enter my logon details and it goes off
saying "loading personal settings" as it should then it just goes back to
the logon screen. This cycle continues until I select shutdown. I cant get
in to the desktop. The machine isn't plugged into the network although it
is set-up with an ip address. I have tried disabling bios settings. The
only other car pci card is the network card and I have also taken that out
and attempted to log in but it still doesn't work. Anyone had experience of
this? Any ideas?

Does the image exactly match your hardware? Any differences may cause
symptoms like yours.

I had the same symptoms you did, but not sure if I just did a whole reformat or started reading error messages to locate files that were problematic and erasing them or not....but I do know the frustration of the condition you were talking about. In my case though, I had installed a "second" version on the hard drive because of some problems. I think the system get's confused when there may be more than one "file". Wish I could help but not sure which route I took when it happened as I don't tend to write down steps when I'm frantically trying to find out what is wrong. :
